For years, composting has been relegated to being primarily the domain of gardeners and environmentalists.
At Moonshot, we’re bringing this incredibly beneficial process for diverting food waste from landfills out of backyards and into the corporate world.
Our commercial composting services empower Houston businesses to:

Houston has one of the most diverse food scenes in the world, but what every restaurant shares is food waste to the tune of half-a-pound per meal, waste that can be turned into a valuable commodity.
Take all that unclaimed food your coworkers leave in the office fridge and help your company contribute to local sustainability efforts.
There are 14 major institutions of learning in and around Houston, with many more satellite campuses and K-12 schools beside. Waste diverted from all those cafeterias, dorms, and apartments can do a lot of good in the community.
Houston’s medical footprint is immense, and the amount of food waste produced by the industry is equally large, and an enormous opportunity to reduce strain on landfills.
Many other types of operations can take advantage of our services, including:
After we consult with you to understand the scope of your desired composting program, we arrange the pickup schedule that works for you. We are TRUE AdvisorTM certified and can plan as robust a waste diversion program as you want. All pre-consumer compostables are acceptable. We can also take post-consumer waste, in some cases. Contact us for more information!
Everything you need to collect the compostable waste–drums, compostable bags, and outdoor bins with airtight lids (so no foul smells to worry about)–is provided by us. We leave you a clean bin and fresh bags at every pickup.
After every pickup, we calculate the pounds diverted from landfills and report the diversions, methane emissions avoided, and compost created. This makes it easy to broadcast your accomplishments to your customers and inspire your team.
“For over two years, Moonshot has been a great partner to by by helping us reach our Net Zero goals in a very tangible way. We now compost 100% of the appropriate waste from the two restaurants on our Houston campus, diverting all of it from the landfill. At the same time, this program is helping our culinary team become more aware of how they can minimize all waste. The compost we receive from Moonshot is used in our community vegetable garden, the vegetables used in our kitchens, the waste composted, the compost used in our garden…”

Although the environmental aspect of composting is the most readily identifiable, it also bears positive fruit within the social and governance elements.

Call us nerds, but we think it’s really cool how spoiled food and leftovers can become a valuable commodity when given enough time and a place to relax. Where is that, you ask?
Your Moonshot collections are transformed into compost at either commercial composting facilities or community gardens.
We believe the merits of composting are enough to convince your business to work with us. That’s why our sales process is transparent and our sign-up process is easy.
For our commercial services we typically use 55-gallon drums, though container selection is part of our onboarding process.
As part of your onboarding, we consult with you to determine a pickup schedule that works for you. In most cases, we collect no more than twice per week.
We take everything we collect to a compost facility, where the food waste is mixed with vegetative waste to become compost. Learn more about what happens to your food waste.
