Home Drop-Off Composting for Houston Residents

Moonshot Compost makes composting as straightforward as your trash or recycling services: you gather it up, and we come get it. We call this Home Pickup Composting, which you can learn more about here.

However, there’s also another way you can compost with us – Home Drop-off Composting.

You get access to the same Moonshot supplies for collecting the waste, and you can still earn back compost for your own use if you choose. The only difference is you bring the food waste to us, whenever you feel like it.

You still get all the benefits of composting, from doing your part to keep food waste out of landfills to creating valuable soil additives.

Set Aside Compostables

As they accumulate, toss your easily compostable fruits and veggies, bread, eggshells, and more in our bin. Our compostable bag and the airtight lid ensure there are no foul smells. Clean and easy!

Drop Off Any Time

Whenever you’re ready, drive up to one of our compost drop-off locations. There you can measure and send us the weight of your compostables (if you choose to), then place them in our dedicated drum. We have simple instructions at each location to take out any guesswork on your part.

Give Yourself a High-Five

Congrats, you just diverted landfill waste and earned yourself some compost! If you want it back, just tell us when (up to twice per year). If you don’t claim it it will be shared with one of our local partners to help feed soil in our community.

What Items Can You Compost?

When you’re dropping off the food waste, we have to turn down a few additional items that we can pick up from you, namely meat, poultry, and seafood. Otherwise, everything we normally accept–fruits and veggies, coffee grounds and filters, pasta and crackers, and more–is still ‘on the table.’

Follow Along as Your Donations Add Up

It’s always nice to be able to put a number on the amount you’ve contributed to a cause you’re passionate about. That’s why we developed an app that allows you to see as you go how many pounds of waste you’ve diverted from landfills, what that looks like in relation to other eco-friendly activities, and more. It’s easy to use and free for all current subscribers.

What Happens to Your Food Waste?

Call us nerds, but we think it’s really cool how spoiled food and leftovers can become a valuable commodity when given enough time and a place to relax. Where is that, you ask?

Your Moonshot collections are transformed into compost at either commercial composting facilities or community gardens.

FAQs About Home Drop-Off

How many bins do you provide?
We provide one 4-gallon bin.

Do I have to measure and send the weight of my compostables?
We provide hand scales so that you can easily weigh your compost and share that weight with us. If you want to track and measure your impact, this is the way. If that’s not your thing, you can skip this part and just drop-off your compost.

What are the opening hours for the drop-off locations?
Roughly speaking, the drop-off locations are open seven days per week, sunup to sundown. There are some exceptions to that general rule, and we’ll communicate those when you sign up.
