Food waste composting for hospitals across Texas.

Moonshot Compost helps hospitals, healthcare systems, rehabilitation centers, and other medical facilities across Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and Waco divert food waste from landfill through a system that is clean, simple, and measurable.

Our service includes routine pickups, clean container swaps, and diversion reporting that helps healthcare teams track impact over time, without adding unnecessary complexity to day-to-day operations.

Hospitals generate food waste every day across cafeterias, kitchens, patient dining, and other food service areas. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it amounts to upwards of 288,000 tons of food waste annually.

Even when teams work hard to manage food waste well, there is still a significant volume that often ends up in landfill.

In healthcare environments, though, the challenge is not just diverting food waste. It is doing so in a way that supports sanitation standards, fits within complex facility logistics, and does not disrupt day-to-day operations.

Composting redirects that food waste into an aerobic process that turns it into a useful soil amendment instead.

For hospitals, that creates a cleaner, more practical way to manage unavoidable food waste while supporting sustainability goals and, where applicable, local diversion requirements.

A composting service built for the realities of healthcare.

Easier operational adoption

Starting a composting program should not create confusion for food service teams. Moonshot helps hospitals implement the program with clear signage, practical training, and guidance on what belongs in the compost stream so staff can follow the process more consistently.

Clean storage and handling

Moonshot containers come with sealed lids to help reduce odors and pests. We also advise on container placement, collection flow, and pickup locations so composting fits within the sanitation and operational standards of your facility.

Reliable volume management

Hospitals can generate significant amounts of food waste across cafeterias, kitchens, and other food service areas. Moonshot provides routine pickups and clean container swaps that help facilities manage that volume while maintaining a cleaner waste system on-site.

Support for compliance and facility standards

Healthcare environments often have stricter operational requirements than other facilities. Moonshot helps customers build food waste diversion programs that support local diversion requirements where they apply and align with site-specific safety and operational expectations.

Traceable diversion data

Each container is weighed at pickup so hospitals can track pounds diverted over time. That gives sustainability and operations teams clearer visibility into performance and data they can use in institutional reporting.

Proud to partner with these hospitals

Hospital operations leaders throughout the state of Texas have discovered the power–and the ease–of composting through their partnerships with Moonshot. Click any of the names below to explore how much a hospital has accomplished by getting smarter with its food waste streams.

How Moonshot helped a pediatric healthcare network build a safe, high-frequency diversion program across multiple campuses.

A leading pediatric healthcare network partnered with Moonshot to turn a high-volume food waste stream into a safer, more controlled diversion program across multiple hospital campuses. What had been difficult to manage within strict clinical environments became a system built around safety, consistency, and verified data.

Moonshot helped support the program with high-frequency clean container exchanges, adaptive pickup workflows, and weight-based diversion tracking designed to meet infection control requirements without disrupting hospital operations. That gave the network better visibility into diversion performance while helping create a safer, more reliable food waste program for sensitive care environments.

What happens to your food waste?

After pickup, your food waste is taken to a TCEQ-permitted commercial composting facility, where it breaks down in an oxygen-rich environment and becomes compost.

This helps provide a transparent, compliant path for your organic material from pickup through processing. Instead of producing methane in landfill, that material is turned into something useful that can help support healthier soil.

Hospital composting FAQs.

  • For our commercial services we typically use 55-gallon drums, though container selection is part of our onboarding process.

  • As part of your onboarding, we consult with you to determine a pickup schedule that works for you. In most cases, we collect no more than twice per week.

  • Meat, fruit, veggies, grains, and more are all acceptable. See the full list of compostables here.

  • We collect from hospitals, healthcare facilities, other medical establishments, and all kinds of commercial enterprises in greater Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Waco. Our service area is continually expanding, so check back often to see if we’re available in your location.

  • We utilize specialized drum protocols and high-frequency exchange cadences (5x per week) to ensure that no material accumulates to a level that poses a flammability or sanitation risk.

  • Yes. We can navigate internal service corridors and kitchens, provided there is a vetted path that meets your facility’s safety and infection control standards.

  • No. Because our drums are gasket-sealed and exchanged so frequently, we eliminate the food sources that traditional waste systems leave behind.
