Food waste composting for multi-family properties across Texas.

Moonshot Compost helps multi-family property managers, ownership groups, and residential communities across Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and Waco divert food waste from landfill through a system that is clean, simple, and measurable.

Our multi-family programs help properties offer a sustainability amenity residents value, reduce pressure on traditional waste systems, and track diversion with verified, weight-based reporting.

Food waste in multi-family communities comes from everyday resident activity across hundreds of units. Even when residents want to dispose of food more responsibly, that material often ends up in the trash, where it breaks down in landfill without oxygen and produces methane.

For property managers, the challenge is not just giving residents a composting option. It is creating a system that is easy to use, works within the realities of the property, and does not create new issues around contamination, access, or waste handling.

Composting redirects that food waste into an aerobic process that turns it into a useful soil amendment instead. For multi-family properties, that creates a cleaner, more practical way to support resident participation, reduce pressure on traditional waste systems, and track diversion with verified data.

A composting service built for the realities of multi-family property management.

Resident participation

A multi-family composting program only works if residents can use it easily and consistently. Moonshot helps properties set up a system that is straightforward to understand, simple to access, and easier to support with clear signage and communication materials.

Compactor pressure

Heavy food waste adds weight quickly to traditional trash systems. Moonshot helps divert that wet organic material into a separate compost stream, which can reduce pressure on compactors and support cleaner, more efficient waste operations.

Property-specific logistics

Every property has its own layout, access points, waste flow, and operational constraints. Moonshot helps design a collection setup that fits your site, supports smoother handling, and makes food waste easier to manage for both residents and property teams.

Portfolio-level visibility

For ownership groups and operators managing more than one property, Moonshot can support reporting across individual communities and broader portfolios. That gives teams better visibility into diversion performance over time and makes reporting easier to manage.

Easier operational adoption

A composting program should fit into existing property operations without creating unnecessary complexity. Moonshot helps teams implement the program with practical guidance on container placement, collection flow, signage, and resident participation.

Cleaner storage and handling

Moonshot containers come with sealed lids to help reduce odors and pests. At every pickup, full containers are removed and replaced with clean, washed containers, helping properties maintain a cleaner food waste system on-site.

Support for local compliance needs

In some markets, multi-family properties may need to meet local diversion or composting requirements. Moonshot helps customers understand those requirements where they apply and build a program that supports compliant food waste handling.

Startup planning

Every program starts with a conversation about your property, waste volume, and site logistics. From there, Moonshot helps map out a program that fits your needs and can be refined over time as real diversion data comes in.

What happens to your food waste?

After collection, your food waste is processed at TCEQ-permitted facilities, giving property managers a fully transparent and compliant chain of custody from pickup through processing. At the facility, food waste breaks down naturally in an oxygen-rich environment and becomes compost.

That means food waste from your property is actively redirected away from landfills and transformed into a powerful environmental asset. This material is processed into high-grade compost that restores biological health to Texas farmlands and serves as critical erosion control for infrastructure projects—acting as a vital biological shield to protect sensitive regional water systems like the Edwards Aquifer.

What can residents compost?

Moonshot accepts many common food scraps, including produce, bread, pasta, coffee grounds, eggshells, and more.

Our goal is to make composting easy for residents and easier for property teams to manage.
